Hexaphone, Victoria’s six-member a capella vocal ensemble, presents “Songs of Travel”, vibrant music about how we travel, at what speed, and why. The featured work is “Gare de Montréal”, written for Hexaphone by Nicholas Fairbank. Selections by the Beatles, James Taylor, Randy Newman and others, sung in Hexaphone’s inimitable style, will round out the program. Let Hexaphone be your travel guide!
Gare de Montréal, a 35-minute work for 5 voices and 15 instrumentalists based on texts by Victoria writer Hélène Cazes, explores the theme of leaving a loved one. Inspired by the architecture and decor of Montreal’s central railway station, the 11 continuous movements lead the listener from the great entrance hall of the Gare Centrale to the cafés and restaurants, the newstands, the graffiti-covered walls of the underground, and the underworld of Greek and Roman mythology.
